How to Use an Apple Peeler

Do you like to use apples as ingredients for dessert or other dishes? Do you prefer to eat fresh apples without their peel? This would mean that you have to spend hours removing the skin manually. That is unless if you have an apple peeler. Having an effective apple peeler will save you lots of time and effort especially if you’ll be preparing large batches of apples.

To use an apple peeler, you will need to mount it directly on the edge of your counter or on the peeler’s base. Make sure that it is tight and sturdy to prevent it from wobbling and moving. Then, you will need to release and pull back the handle of the apple peeler. Take your apple and pierce it thoroughly into the peeler’s prongs.

Hold the apple peeler steady as you turn the handle to start peeling the apple. Continue turning the handle until the apple is completely peeled. Once that is done, you’ll want to remove the apple gently by pulling it off. You will also notice that the apple has been cleanly removed of its core aside from its peel. You can now use the peeled and cored apple immediately or begin to peel another piece.

The Many Kinds of Apple Peelers

Safely and quickly peel apples with apple peelers.

Apple is a lot of things. It is a symbol of eternal youth and fertility in Norse mythology, love in Ancient Greece, and sin in the Book of Genesis. The Welsh of two hundred years ago, however, tend to take their cue from the Norse. They believed that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". Today's medical and health practitioners confirm this age-old adage as they themselves proclaim the fruit's health benefits. It fights cancer, particularly of the colon, prostate, and lungs. It is rich in antioxidants. It reduces the risk of heart disease. And it controls cholesterol build up.

Eating apples, then, is healthy. Peeling them with knives and cutting your fingers and palms in the process, however, is not. Fortunately, machine-savvy apple-eaters created a contraption that can peel, core, and slice apples quickly and without posing any danger to your hands.

Simply called apple peelers, these ingenious devices, made either of plastic or metal, come in many designs and configurations. In some designs, the apple is held upright while in others, it is in a horizontal position. There are also peelers where the apple is held diagonally.

Some incorporate a C-clamp that is fastened to your worktable or counter to stabilize the machine when it is cranked. Others are simply constructed with a large and relatively heavy base for stability. Light-duty home-use apple peelers, however, generally have neither a clamp nor a heavy base, so that they will have to be held down by hand when used.

All peelers are equipped with two blades, one for peeling the apple's skin and a round one for removing the core. Some peelers simultaneously slice the apple as it is peeled while others only peel and core. If it is sliced, it is often in the form of a coil.

Hand-cranked apple peelers are often enough to meet the needs of most homes. For restaurants or other food-processing establishments, however, they may need a motorized version allowing them to peel an apple in a matter of seconds.

With an apple peeler, regardless of its design or type, you will be eating more apples and keeping the doctor away.
